You get used to that,' he said, shrugging his shoulders.īecause he prefers eating vegetables fresh, he would rather give what he grows in his half-acre garden to others than can or freeze it. Like other gardeners, he often finds he's eating the same vegetable several nights in a row when it's harvest time for a particular crop. I love corn, but I don't pick it until everybody is already seated at the table. 'The lettuce is only about an hour old when we eat it. Gardening in California is a year-round commitment, so fresh vegetables (and he emphasized the word 'fresh') have always been an important part of the Albert family's diet. So the rewards are a longer life, a happier life, a more relaxed and healthier life.'

Spending an hour, a half-hour or even five minutes looking at flowers growing or a tree budding takes the knots out of your neck. 'The rewards in gardening are far more than just simple food,' he said. 'A lot of people would pay me $250,000 to let them do my roles.'Īnd, although he makes considerably more money acting, he loves gardening equally as much and has had no problem finding time for it in the midst of his hectic acting career. 'It's a pity to take money for it,' he said. After all, it's one thing to have corn growing in your backyard, but it's news when you put it in your front yard.'Īlbert loves to entertain people, and as a result, he has an enviable reputation in the entertainment world for the versatility and excellence of his performances. 'I go on television talking about it and the next thing I know, there are people from West Virginia in my driveway looking at my corn,' Albert said. His neighbors don't seem to mind and curiousity seekers go to great extents to get a peek. 'All spring and summer and up until Christmas I have corn growing in my front yard, right along the street,' said Albert, who plants it there to be different and is amused by reactions to it.
